The kids were chanting, surrounded by a ring of lit candles. A wiji board was laying off to the side. A porclain doll was in the center of the young girls, no older than fifteen. There were five of them. Each had two fingers layed under the doll.
The chanting was a quiet murmmer, adding to the haunted feeling that flowed in the air.
"Light as a feather. Stiff as a board. Light as a feather. Stiff as a board. Light as a feather. Stiff as a board. Light as a feather. Stiff as a board. Light as a feather. Stiff as a b--"
The chant broke off as gasps ran around the circle. The doll had moved it's arm and the closed eyes that had been on the doll in a lying position, flew open. The girls screamed and scattered, knocking over the flames as the went.
One girl was frozen in shock, her hands still held under the doll. She couldnt make her muscles move. The dolls piercing gaze held the her motionless. A slight song echoed through the now empty room as the furniture started to catch on fire.
The song was one that you would hear kids singing in the play ground, only different. Normally you would hear the song about picking up sticks, tying your shoes, laying the sticks straight, and something about a big fat hen. But this song was full of death.
To the girl who sat still frozen in terror, the song came from nowhere.
" One, Two. He's comming for you. Three, Four. Lock your door. Five, Six. Get a crusifix. Seven. Eight. Stay awake. Nine. Ten. Never sleep again..."
It took a minute for the small girl to realize that the doll's mouth was moving and the eyes on the now morbid and bloody face were rolling in the sockets.
There was a sharp rapping on the back door's glass. The girl screamed and ran out the front. The line still running it's course through her head. The song blared in her ears as if the doll were singing it again. The erie part of the song was that it wasnt just one voice comming from the doll, but many. Echoing as if you were listening to a distant memory.
The song repeated non-stop in the little girls head. 'One, Two. He's comming for you. Three, Four. Lock your door. Five, Six. Get a crusifix. Seven. Eight. Stay awake. Nine. Ten. Never sleep again. One, Two. He's comming for you. Three, Four. Lock your door. Five, Six. Get a crusifix. Seven. Eight. Stay awake. Nine. Ten. Never sleep again. One, Two. He's comming for you. Three, Four. Lock your door. Five, Six. Get a crusifix. Seven. Eight. Stay awake. Nine. Ten. Never sleep again...'
The girl shuddered as she looked back at the house that was now engulfed in flames. A shadow was crossing the lawn, following the panicked child.
She made to the short cut that lead to her house. Only problem was, the short cut was a series of earthen stairs through a revine. This way, through the dark trees, would only take her ten minutes to get home. It would be quicker, and give the persuer less of a chance. But the persuer could trap her in the trees. She could take the long way but it would take another twenty minutes to go around the small wood.
With panick stricken eyes, she glanced over her shoulder. The shadow was advancing on her, something glittered in his hand and the song ran sharp and sudden through the air. "One, Two. He's comming for you. Three, Four. Lock your door. Five, Six. Get a crusifix. Seven. Eight. Stay awake. Nine. Ten. Never sleep again..."
She would have to take the short cut. The girl ran through the opening and took each step, two at a time down.
One step, two steps, three steps, four steps-- A branch snapped somewhere in the trees. Her breathing caught in her chest, but she pushed on. Five steps, six steps, seven steps, eight steps, nine steps-- A bush rustled and the swoosh of clothing penetrated the air.
She glanced back over her shoulder. The shadow was decending the steps. The girl picked up her pace as she realized the glittering silver object in the shadow's hand was covered in blood.
Ten steps, eleven steps, twelve steps, thirteen-- Finally, she reached the flat part. The bottom of the revine where a slight bridge ran over a gushing stream. This part of the path was wooden and her footsteps hit heavily on the planks.
She sprinted accross the water, hoping that the shadow was a vampire. Vampires couldnt cross running water.
She made it to the steps that were much steeper, but led up and out of the revine. She began to clamber up them.
One step, two steps, three steps-- there was only silence behind her. Had the persuer given up? She was almost home. Four steps, five steps, six steps-- she risked a glance over her shoulder. Nothing was there. Her breathin eased up. Seven steps, eight steps, nine steps, ten steps, eleven steps-- still no sound of the follower. Twelve steps-- She could see the faint light of the moon ahead. Thirteen steps-- Finally she was out of the forest.
The girl's heart stuttered in fear as she saw headlights blare. She dashed across the street. She could see her door. Her hair swung over her shoulder as she turned her head to check yet again if the shadow was behind her. There was no sign.
She dashed up the steps and nearly hit her door as she tried to get to the door handle. The door swung open once it was unlocked and she flew in. She fumbled with the lock making sure the deadbolt was tightly in place. She sank onto the floor, her back against the secured door, and stared into the black living room. The moon was only barely getting in through the window. There was only enough light to see a shadow move and the light reflect off of a silver object that was covered in blood.
The girl screamed.
